Consider these tips when thinking of your nursing travel assignments and how to transition in among the regular staff as a traveling nurse.

The first and foremost is never to boast or brag about your nursing pay. The regular staff at the hospitals already know that you are making well over what their nursing pay is.  Some nurses resent this while others wish they were able to travel but for different reasons are not able to.

Have a positive attitude when you work your shift.  Be kind, considerate and friendly towards the other staff.  As you know, a regular nursing staff employee is often overworked and not given the appreciation that is deserved.

Professionalism is expected in nursing travel.  You are regarded as someone with experience and know how.

Be respectful and helpful to other nurses and you will find they will be respectful and helpful to you also.

Be prepared for your assignment.  Tour the hospital before you start your nursing travel contract to familiarize yourself with the layout.  Take mental and written notes during orientation for locations of supplies, departments, telephone numbers (supervisors, pharmacy etc.) and names of key staff.

Smile.  It brings out your positive side and shows your confidence.

Ask questions when needed but try not to overload the other nurses when working a shift.  It takes them away from their patients and paperwork.

Don't act like a know it all even if you do know it all.  There are not very many positive vibes from other nursing staff with someone who thinks they know everything.

Act as though the hospital is your regular employer (they kind of are) and do a good nursing job for them.  It's awesome when you have patients and regular staff complimenting you to supervisors and wanting you as their nurse or the other staff hoping they will work with you again.

Again, be kind, considerate, friendly, helpful, professional, prepared, positive and smile.  These tips will help you go along way in your nursing travel assignments.

You will find your nursing travel enjoyable, positive and you will gain many friendships that will last a lifetime.
